The *paterfamilias* was the male head of a Roman family, possessing absolute authority over his household. This power, called *patria potestas*, encompassed control over his wife, children (including married sons and their families), slaves, and property. He made all important decisions, managed finances, and represented the family in public life. This position was rooted in tradition, offering legal and social structure, emphasizing responsibility, and establishing a lineage through which Roman society was built. Though authority could be brutal, the *paterfamilias* also bore the responsibility of protecting and providing for his extended family.
