Phlogopite

Phlogopite is a phyllosilicate mineral in the mica group. It's a hydrated magnesium potassium aluminum silicate hydroxide, often appearing as brown to yellowish, translucent to transparent crystals. Its composition varies, with iron substituting for magnesium in the structure, influencing color and properties. Found in metamorphic rocks like skarns and contact metamorphic zones, as well as in some igneous rocks, phlogopite's perfect basal cleavage allows it to split into thin, flexible sheets. It’s relatively resistant to weathering and is often used as an insulator or in industrial applications requiring its thermal and electrical resistance. The mineral's name derives from the Greek words "phlogos" meaning "flame" and "op" meaning "appearance", due to its fiery glow when viewed by reflected light and its ability to appear reddish or brown, which varies based on trace elements.
