A phospholipid is a type of lipid molecule that is the primary component of all cell membranes. It consists of a glycerol backbone attached to two fatty acid tails (hydrophobic) and a phosphate-containing head group (hydrophilic). This amphipathic nature, with both water-loving and water-fearing regions, is crucial for their role in forming the lipid bilayer structure of cell membranes. Phospholipids spontaneously arrange themselves into this bilayer in aqueous environments, shielding the hydrophobic tails from water and allowing the polar heads to interact with the surrounding water. They provide the structural framework of cells and also play vital roles in cellular signaling and other biological processes.
