Phragmites

Phragmites (frag-MY-teez) is a genus of four species of large perennial reed grasses found in wetlands around the world. The common reed, *Phragmites australis*, is the most widespread, highly adaptable, and often invasive species. Characterized by its tall, sturdy stems and feathery, plume-like seed heads, phragmites plays a crucial role in wetland ecosystems, providing habitat for wildlife, filtering water, and preventing erosion. However, the invasive nature of certain species can crowd out native plants, altering biodiversity and ecological balance in affected areas. Effective management strategies, including controlled burns and herbicide applications, are often employed to control their spread and mitigate their negative impacts.
