A 'pingback' is a web-based notification system enabling websites to communicate with each other. It allows a website owner to automatically inform another site when they've linked to a specific page on the latter. When a link is detected, the linking website sends a pingback request, which, if accepted by the receiving site, displays a notification, often as a comment or trackback. This verifies that the link exists and provides a degree of interaction between two interconnected online entities. Pingbacks assist with SEO, indicating link popularity and web-of-influence to search engines, promoting more content sharing, awareness and driving traffic between the two entities.
