The term 'plebs' (singular: 'pleb') historically referred to the common people of ancient Rome, the general populace excluding the patricians (the aristocratic ruling class). Over time, it has evolved to describe ordinary people in a derogatory or condescending way, implying a lack of sophistication, education, or wealth. Often, it denotes a perceived lower social class or group lacking refined tastes. The word can carry strong negative connotations, suggesting ignorance, vulgarity, and a perceived lack of intelligence or cultural awareness. It is frequently used to differentiate a speaker or their group from the 'lower' strata of society. While originally a term of historical significance in Rome, its modern application leans toward social critique or prejudice.
