Pluton

A pluton is a large, intrusive igneous rock body that crystallized from magma slowly cooling deep beneath the Earth's surface. These massive formations, often kilometers in size, are typically composed of granitic or dioritic rocks. Plutons are identified by their coarse-grained texture, reflecting the slow cooling process that allowed for large crystal growth. They are classified based on their shape, size, and relationship to surrounding geological structures. • Geologists studying the Sierra Nevada mountains identified several ancient plutons, revealing the history of volcanic activity in the region. These massive granite intrusions were exposed by erosion over millions of years, showcasing the scale of magma chambers that once existed underground.
• The intrusion of a pluton can cause significant changes in the surrounding rocks, resulting in metamorphic aureoles.
