Polyalkene
A polyalkene is a large molecule, or polymer, formed by the joining together of many smaller alkene molecules (monomers) through a polymerization process. Alkenes are unsaturated hydrocarbons characterized by a carbon-carbon double bond. The properties of a polyalkene, such as flexibility, melting point, and chemical resistance, are determined by the structure of the repeating alkene unit and the polymerization conditions. These polymers are widely used in plastics, fibers, and elastomers due to their versatility and relatively low cost to produce.

- Polyethylene, a common polyalkene, is utilized extensively in the manufacturing of plastic bags and bottles. Its flexibility and low cost make it ideal for packaging. Further, its water resistance is beneficial for storage of liquids. Manufacturers alter polyethylene’s properties based on their application, making it exceptionally useful in many common products.
- Polypropylene, another important polyalkene, is a material used in automotive parts, such as bumpers and dashboards, due to its strength and resistance to impact. Additionally, polypropylene’s resistance to some solvents makes it optimal for laboratory equipment. Its high melting point also allows it to be exposed to elevated temperatures with minimal alteration to its structure.
- In the textile industry, polyalkenes like polyethylene terephthalate (PET) are spun into synthetic fibers. These fibres are often used in clothing and carpets. PET's durability and ability to be recycled make it a widely used option in these products. Many of these are made from recycled PET.
- Polyisobutylene, a specialized polyalkene, is often employed in the production of adhesives and sealants, benefiting from its elasticity and tackiness. Its unique properties allow for use in medical adhesives, providing strong yet gentle adhesion, and in industrial sealants that provide resistance to the elements.
