In the context of physics, signal processing, or data analysis, 'quantized' describes something that is restricted to taking on only discrete, specific values rather than a continuous range of values. This process, known as quantization, involves representing a continuous quantity with a finite set of approximations. The level of granularity is determined by the chosen quantization level, which directly affects the information lost during this approximation. This concept finds application in analog-to-digital conversion, digital image processing, and other digital systems. Quantization often introduces a 'quantization error,' which is the difference between the original value and its quantized counterpart. Quantized meaning with examples

• In digital audio, a continuous sound wave is quantized by sampling its amplitude at regular intervals and assigning each sample a discrete value. This process, crucial for music reproduction, allows for the storage of audio data on computers and other digital devices. The number of bits used directly determines the sound quality.
• The pixel intensity of a digital image is quantized. Each pixel, representing a small area of the image, is assigned a specific grayscale value or color value (e.g., 8-bit grayscale). Reducing the number of levels can lead to visible banding or loss of detail in the image, a result of the quantized nature of the pixel data.
• Electrons in an atom's orbitals are quantized, existing only at specific energy levels. They cannot occupy intermediate energy states, which is a cornerstone of quantum mechanics. The discrete energy levels are a direct outcome of quantum effects, governing atomic stability and the emission/absorption of light.
