Quintain

A Quintain is a training device used in medieval times and, to a lesser extent, in modern re-enactments, primarily for jousting practice. It typically consists of a vertical post with a cross arm. A shield or target is mounted on one end of the cross arm, and a weight, often a sandbag or weighted bag, is attached to the other. The objective is for a rider to charge at the target with a lance and hit it squarely. If the lance strikes the target accurately, the rider continues through the motion and the weight doesn't swing around to strike the rider. Conversely, a poor strike will cause the weight to swing and potentially knock the rider off his horse. The Quintain therefore helped develop a rider's accuracy, timing, and balance.
