Razorbill

The razorbill ( *Alca torda* ) is a species of seabird in the auk family, *Alcidae*. It is a black and white bird, easily identified by its thick, black bill with a distinctive white band and a sharp, curved tip resembling a razor. They are excellent divers, using their wings to "fly" underwater in pursuit of fish, their primary food source. These birds are colonial nesters, typically breeding on cliffs and rocky shorelines in the North Atlantic Ocean, and they have a lifespan which can exceed twenty years. During the breeding season, they engage in elaborate courtship displays, and they are known for their social behaviors and vocalizations, especially when in their colonies, the harsh calls echo around the cliffs.

Razorbill meaning with examples

• During my visit to the coastal cliffs of Iceland, I was mesmerized by the sight of hundreds of razorbills nesting, the cliffs were filled with these distinct birds. The distinct calls and their black and white plumage made them very noticeable as they dove from the high cliffs into the sea in search of prey. • Razorbills have strong bonds with the rookery environment, because that is where they have developed their ability to hunt. Their social behaviours create a secure haven for breeding and raising their young in a stable environment, each generation passes on this knowledge, which leads to their success.
