Reflectance, in physics and especially in optics, is the ratio of the radiant flux reflected by a surface to the radiant flux incident upon it. It essentially quantifies how much light or other electromagnetic radiation a surface bounces back. This property is crucial in understanding how we perceive color, how optical instruments work, and how remote sensing techniques analyze the Earth and other celestial bodies. The reflectance value is typically expressed as a percentage or a decimal between 0 and 1.

• Scientists use reflectance measurements to determine the surface composition of planets. By analyzing the wavelengths of light reflected from Mars, they can infer the presence of minerals. The varying reflectance of different terrains on the Martian surface provides clues about its geological history, including the presence of iron oxides that give the planet its reddish hue.
