The verb "refuses" (present tense of "refuse") indicates the act of declining to accept, grant, or allow something. The refusal often implies a conscious decision, motivated by factors like disagreement, self-preservation, or a pre-existing obligation. Refuses meaning with examples

• The bank refuses to lend him money due to his poor credit history, citing a high risk of default. He had made several attempts at gaining a small loan, and after having been refused he attempted to improve his credit history. After improving, he later reapplied and was granted a loan. This was his first refusal.
• Despite repeated requests, the company refuses to release its financial records to the public, claiming they contain sensitive competitive information, therefore putting any would-be competitors at an advantage. This caused a drop in confidence with investors, due to the refusal to release financial data, as well as a scandal for a large portion of the public.
• The athlete refuses to participate in the post-game interview after a controversial loss, feeling too emotional and embarrassed about the score of the game. It was later deemed the athlete could be penalized for not participating in the required interview session following the game.
• She refuses to eat any food that contains artificial sweeteners, prioritizing her health and well-being over convenience or taste. This has made her diet very limited, and she has trouble finding healthy foods that meet her needs.
