Rotting

The process of decay or decomposition, typically of organic matter, caused by bacterial or fungal action. It signifies the breakdown of tissues, cells, and structures, resulting in a foul odor and often a change in color and texture. This process is natural in the breakdown of organic matter in the environment, but can also be an undesirable outcome in food preservation or in the health of living organisms. The speed of rotting varies depending on environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, and the presence of oxygen and is often associated with the release of gases and liquids from the decomposing substance. The stage of decay can be an indicator for determining how close a substance or being is to the end.

• The farmer was dismayed to discover the harvest had begun rotting in the barn. Excessive rainfall and poor ventilation had created the perfect environment for the crops to decay. The unpleasant smell permeated the entire building, and many of the vegetables were completely ruined, costing the farmer significant time and money.
