Rowlock

A rowlock, also known as an oarlock or thole, is a U-shaped fitting, often made of metal, wood, or plastic, affixed to the gunwale (upper edge) of a boat. Its primary function is to hold an oar in place, allowing the rower to pivot the oar and propel the boat through the water. The rowlock provides a fulcrum, or point of leverage, enabling efficient transfer of the rower's force to the oar blade and subsequently to the water.
