Rug

A floor covering made of thick woven material, typically of wool, cotton, or synthetic fibers. Rugs are used for warmth, to absorb sound, to decorate a room, or to protect the floor. They can range in size from small mats to cover an entire floor, or an entire room. They are usually rectangular or square, though they can come in many shapes. Historically, rugs have been valuable commodities and symbols of status, with intricate designs reflecting the culture of their origin. They provide comfort and aesthetic appeal to a variety of interior settings, offering a soft surface and often defining space in a room.

• The Persian rug in the living room was an heirloom, passed down through generations and adding a touch of elegance. Its intricate patterns and rich colours transformed the space. The children always played near it. The family knew its value, both monetary and sentimental. Keeping it clean was a constant struggle, though.
• Before the sale, the homeowner's first step was to determine where each item needed to go. She carefully unrolled the large, patterned rug in the dining room and placed the heavy furniture on top of it, ensuring the pattern was centered. This defined the room. This gave her room to breathe when setting it up.
