Rusting

Rusting refers to the corrosion of iron or iron-containing alloys, a process where the metal reacts with oxygen and moisture in the presence of an electrolyte (such as saltwater) to form iron oxides, commonly known as rust. This reddish-brown or orange flaky substance weakens the metal, leading to its deterioration and eventual failure. The rusting process is accelerated by factors like humidity, the presence of salt, and exposure to pollutants. Preventing rusting involves protective coatings, alloy mixtures (e.g., stainless steel), and electrochemical methods like galvanization and cathodic protection.

• The old car sat abandoned in the field, its once-vibrant paint now faded and peeling, the metal frame slowly rusting. Years of exposure to the elements had taken their toll, leaving a network of rust across the chassis. The inevitable rusting reduced the vehicle to scrap.
