Same-gender-loving
Same-gender-loving (SGL) is a term primarily used within the Black community to describe individuals who are attracted to and engage in sexual or romantic relationships with people of the same gender. It distinguishes itself from "gay" or "lesbian" for several reasons, including cultural and historical contexts, and for some, a spiritual or personal identity beyond sexual orientation. The term aims to provide an alternative label for same-sex attraction that resonates more authentically with Black identity, history and spirituality. The term SGL reflects a positive affirmation of same-sex relationships and sexuality within the Black community and rejects the term "homosexual" often considered pejorative or associated with negative societal stereotypes. SGL encompasses both men and women, and its use emphasizes the diverse spectrum of sexual expression. It is not considered as an umbrella term, and not all members of the Black LGBT community identify as SGL.
