Sciuridae

Sciuridae refers to the family of rodents that includes squirrels, chipmunks, marmots, prairie dogs, and flying squirrels. These animals are characterized by their generally bushy tails, sharp claws, and strong teeth adapted for gnawing. Found worldwide, except in Australia and Antarctica, they exhibit diverse ecological adaptations, occupying arboreal, terrestrial, and even fossorial (burrowing) niches. Their diet is primarily herbivorous, consisting of nuts, seeds, fruits, and fungi, though some species are omnivorous. They play a crucial role in seed dispersal and are a significant part of the ecosystem. Behavioral characteristics vary widely across the family, including solitary and social lifestyles, diurnal and nocturnal activity patterns, and varying degrees of hibernation. Some species are considered pests in human environments due to their tendency to damage crops or structures, while others are valued for their role in ecosystems and recreational observation.
