Scorifier
A Scorifier is a refractory ceramic cup or crucible used in the process of scorification, a pyrometallurgical method primarily used to separate precious metals (like gold and silver) from base metals and other impurities. The Scorifier typically contains a charge of a metal-containing material mixed with a flux, and is then subjected to high heat in a furnace. The flux facilitates the oxidation of base metals and the formation of a slag, which absorbs these oxides and allows them to be separated from the precious metals, which collect at the bottom in a molten state. Scorifiers are designed to withstand the high temperatures and corrosive environment involved in this process, often made of materials like bone ash, magnesia, or clay. Their size and shape can vary depending on the scale of the operation and the nature of the material being processed.
