Skid

A skid refers to the sudden loss of traction or grip between a vehicle's tires and the road surface, often causing a loss of control. This can occur due to a variety of factors including slippery conditions, sudden braking, accelerating too quickly, or sharp steering maneuvers. The resulting sliding motion, where the tires fail to rotate properly, can be dangerous, particularly at high speeds. The term can also describe the act of sliding along a surface, such as on ice or dirt.

• The car began to skid on the icy road, its wheels desperately searching for purchase. Despite the driver's attempts to counter-steer, the vehicle continued to slide sideways, narrowly avoiding a collision with the oncoming traffic. Fortunately, the driver managed to regain control after a moment of terror, slowly bringing the car back into the lane and continuing the journey with caution.
• During the sudden downpour, the motorcyclist experienced a terrifying skid as they applied the brakes too firmly, losing control of the bike. The rear tire locked up, sending the motorcycle fishtailing across the slick pavement.
