Skidding

Skidding refers to the action of sliding uncontrollably on a surface, typically due to loss of traction. This loss of control can occur with vehicles, often resulting from wet, icy, or gravelly conditions, or any situation where there's insufficient friction between the tires and the road. It describes an unintentional sideways movement, disrupting the intended direction of travel. The severity of a skid can range from a minor slip to a complete loss of control, potentially leading to accidents and damage. The term can also extend to contexts beyond transportation, describing the unwanted movement across any surface with reduced friction.

• The car began skidding on the ice patch, its tires desperately trying to regain grip. The driver fought to regain control, counter-steering and pumping the brakes, but the vehicle continued to slide dangerously towards the curb. The chilling experience left everyone rattled, a harsh reminder of winter driving hazards. Emergency services were contacted to ensure everyone was safe.
• As the truck driver rounded the bend on the rain-slicked highway, he felt the trailer skidding, pulling the entire rig sideways.
