Slough

The word 'slough' has multiple meanings, primarily referring to the shedding or cast-off matter, often dead tissue, like skin, or a marshy area. It can also describe the act of getting rid of something unwanted, or falling into a state of inactivity or despair. Finally, it's used to describe a place where things become stagnant, like a swamp or a muddy hole. Its meaning depends heavily on context, all linking to release, decay or decline.

Slough meaning with examples

• After the burn victim's skin began to slough, the doctors worked to prevent infection and promote healthy tissue growth, and the peeling skin had to be thoroughly cleaned to avoid complications. The sloughing was a natural, if unpleasant, part of the healing process. This process was considered a crucial aspect to a full recovery. The body was shedding the damaged tissue to give way to recovery.

The group had to traverse carefully across this obstacle.

This period had her completely lacking any kind of desire, with the result of her becoming almost non functional.
