To solarize means to expose something to the sun or to the effects of sunlight, or to process film in such a way that it mimics the effects of prolonged exposure to sunlight. In photography, this technique involves partially or fully reversing the tonal values of an image, resulting in a surreal and often dreamlike aesthetic. The process manipulates light sensitivity. It is also to expose material or soil to sunlight to sanitize it. The term can encompass both literal exposure to the sun's rays and the artistic imitation of those effects. Solarization changes the colors of an image and can produce highlights or edges with a specific color.
