Sot

A sot is a person who is habitually drunk; a habitual drunkard. This individual often displays impaired judgment, coordination, and behavior due to excessive alcohol consumption. Sots are frequently associated with public intoxication, health problems, and social dysfunction. The term implies a repeated and often uncontrolled pattern of drinking, distinguishing them from occasional drinkers. They are often characterized by a lack of self-control and an addiction to alcohol.

• The old man, a confirmed sot, could often be found slumped against the wall of the pub, muttering incoherently. His family had tried interventions, but his addiction had taken hold of him, leaving him isolated and in poor health. He'd been a sot for over 20 years and his behaviour was consistently erratic and unpredictable.
• After losing his job, and spiraling in depression, the newly unemployed man became a sot, often staggering home late at night. He'd been trying to come off alcohol for years, but would always end up giving in to his cravings after several days. The man would always say tomorrow was the day he'd give up the drink.
• The villagers whispered about the eccentric recluse, a known sot who rarely left his decaying cottage. The sot was feared and avoided because of his unpredictability, often starting arguments and sometimes getting into physical altercations when drunk. He spent all of his money on the local gin, as it was the only thing that brought him 'peace'.

His business had gone bankrupt and he could no longer remember his children. He found that without the drink, he was in agony and he started the vicious cycle over again, starting with one small glass.
