Strong-arming refers to the use of intimidation, coercion, or physical force to compel someone to do something against their will. It’s distinct from assertive behavior or legitimate influence, as it relies on making the other party feel threatened or powerless. The aim is usually compliance, although the desired outcome is not always achieved with the target sometimes choosing other courses of action.

Strong-arming meaning with examples

• The landlord attempted to strong-arm the tenants into accepting a rent increase by threatening eviction. The tenants, aware of their rights, refused to be intimidated and organized a protest. The situation escalated, and the landlord eventually backed down. This shows that strong-arming doesn't always work, and it can backfire when people stand up for themselves.
