Suzerainty

Suzerainty is a relationship between a superior state or "suzerain" and a dependent territory or "vassal" state. The suzerain exercises control over the vassal's foreign affairs, including treaties and declarations of war, but usually allows the vassal a degree of internal autonomy. This often manifests in the form of protection, tribute, or loyalty provided by the vassal in exchange for the suzerain's defense and diplomatic representation. It's a complex political arrangement, falling between full sovereignty and colonialism, often arising from conquest, treaty, or historical evolution.

Suzerainty meaning with examples

• After its victory in the Crimean War, the Ottoman Empire, initially a suzerain over several Balkan regions, saw its influence diminish. European powers, like Russia and Austria-Hungary, increasingly exerted influence over these vassal states, eventually leading to their independence and weakening the Ottoman Empire's suzerainty over them.
