Taphole

A taphole is a small opening or orifice in a furnace, usually found in the bottom or side, through which molten metal, such as iron or steel, is drained or 'tapped' during the smelting or refining process. The taphole is typically sealed with a clay or refractory material plug that is periodically removed to allow the molten material to flow out. This process is crucial for the separation of the desired metal from the impurities (slag) and for controlling the flow of the liquid metal. The size and position of the taphole are critical factors in the efficiency of the metallurgical operation, affecting the speed of tapping, the temperature of the metal, and the quality of the final product. It can also refer to the small opening in a furnace of a cupola that is used in the casting and molding industry to tap molten metal.
