Therians

Therians (also known as otherkin or species identifiers) are individuals who identify as non-human animals, either physically or spiritually. This identification stems from a deep sense of connection to a specific animal or species, believing their soul, mind, or spirit is that of the animal. This feeling is often present since childhood. The level of identification can vary from feeling a deep kinship to experiencing species dysphoria, the strong misalignment between their perceived true self and their physical human form. Therianthropy differs from mere appreciation of animals or role-playing; it involves a fundamental sense of being that animal.

Therians meaning with examples

• Lila, since childhood, always felt more connected to wolves than humans. She researches wolf behaviour, sometimes feels phantom shifts, and actively works to embody wolf-like mannerisms. Lila is considered a Therian, deeply identifying with a wolf spirit.
• Even though John enjoys cosplay of wolves, his experiences don't run much deeper than that. He feels an extreme sense of belonging to the pack on a much deeper level than simple admiration of canines, which makes him different from a wolf therian.
• The local therian community organises gatherings where individuals share their experiences and practice their respective species-based behaviors. During these sessions, they find comfort and understanding among like-minded people identifying with the same spirit animal.
• Despite societal perceptions, Sarah, a therian who identifies as a raven, feels this part of her helps her find a feeling of peace and self-acceptance. Through this strong connection, she navigates her daily life with the help of her identification.
