The state of being not under hypnosis; not subjected to the induced state of heightened suggestibility, altered awareness, and focused attention characteristic of hypnosis. An unhypnotized individual retains full conscious control and is capable of rational thought, independent decision-making, and critical evaluation of information. They are resistant to direct suggestion and are generally more difficult to influence in ways associated with hypnotic phenomena. The individual is typically aware of their surroundings, their own actions, and their own state of mind, in contrast to a subject undergoing a hypnotic trance, who may experience altered perceptions, amnesia, or a distorted sense of reality. This lack of susceptibility defines the absence of being in this state.
