Villein

A villein, also spelled villain, was a feudal tenant entirely subject to the lord of the manor to whom he paid dues and services in return for protection and the right to cultivate a plot of land. They were bound to the soil, meaning they could not leave the manor without the lord's permission and were often subject to the lord's arbitrary whims. The villein's labor was a crucial component of the manorial system, providing the agricultural output that sustained the nobility and clergy. Their legal status was a significant characteristic of medieval society, marking a distinct social and economic class.
