An 'aside' is a digression or something spoken by a character in a play in a way that is not meant to be heard by other characters on stage. It is a brief comment or remark that departs from the main subject or topic of a conversation or discussion. It can also refer to a position or location off to one side, away from the center or main focus. Figuratively, it suggests keeping something private or confidential, or considering something separately. • In Shakespeare's *Hamlet*, the character will sometimes speak an 'aside', which is a private observation or thought that only the audience can hear, revealing his inner turmoil. He may state his true feelings about something or another character whilst other actors are on stage. This theatrical device is very effective in creating dramatic irony, where the audience knows something that the other characters do not.
• During the heated debate on climate change, the politician made an 'aside' about the opposing party's lack of environmental record, completely shifting the tone of conversation. Instead of staying on topic he deviated from his own argument to score political points which ended up derailing the whole session. The moderator had to regain control to continue discussing the topic.
• The artist stepped 'aside' from the bustling street scene to find a quiet spot to sketch the architecture. He moved to the very edge of the pathway as to not cause any obstruction for bypassers. The peaceful spot offered a fresh perspective and allowed him to focus on his craft without the distractions of crowds or noise.
• She made a quick 'aside' to her friend during the formal meeting, whispering, 'I think he's lying!' The pair agreed the statement was not meant to be heard by their colleagues, they only shared the thought between themselves. The sudden commentary was done to avoid interrupting the speaker in front of them and to make it less obvious to those around them.
• The financial advisor set the high-risk investments 'aside' from the core portfolio to protect the client’s long-term financial stability. It was deemed to be a completely separate and distinct investment strategy to the client's original intentions and strategy, therefore, the financial advisor was keen to mention its unique characteristics.
