Backward-
Relating to, directed toward, or located at the rear or reverse; moving or tending in the reverse direction; characterized by a lack of progress or development; tending to revert to an earlier, often less desirable, state or condition. It can also describe a person who is shy, or unsophisticated. The term frequently implies a reversal of direction, order, or progress, whether physical, temporal, or intellectual. It can also mean to reverse, or cause something to act in reverse, or in the opposite direction. Furthermore, a 'backward' person may lack social skills. It can also describe someone of a lower or less educated social class.
Backward- meaning with examples
- The ship was forced to move backward- during the storm, the sailors attempted to keep the vessel from drifting. The storm surge drove the ship farther and farther from the coast, with the wind howling. The captain, however, was able to steer backward-, avoiding a complete disaster, ultimately saving the crew and ship.
- His backward- glance revealed a trail of footsteps disappearing into the snow. He hesitated, torn between continuing forward or retracing his steps. The backward- gaze gave him the image of the danger that followed, and helped him make an informed decision. Finally, he had enough sense and enough wisdom.
- Critics often described the company's recent policies as a backward- step, hindering innovation and progress. The decision made by management to cease production created an environment that lacked forward-thinking, as opposed to what they did before. The backward- step they were taking, may cause damage in the long run.
