Breathalyzer

A breathalyzer, also known as a breath alcohol analyzer, is a device used to estimate blood alcohol content (BAC) from a breath sample. It works by measuring the concentration of alcohol vapor in exhaled breath. Law enforcement officers commonly use breathalyzers to determine if a driver is operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol (DUI). The results are often admissible as evidence in legal proceedings. Modern breathalyzers employ various technologies, including fuel cell sensors and infrared spectroscopy, to provide an accurate and rapid alcohol measurement.

• After being pulled over for swerving, the officer requested that the driver take a breathalyzer test to determine if they were under the influence of alcohol. The driver's BAC reading indicated that they exceeded the legal limit, leading to an arrest for DUI, which, by law, he had to comply with the instruction from the officer, so he gave a sample to the breathalyzer.
• The police officer used a portable breathalyzer at a sobriety checkpoint to screen drivers and ensure road safety. Many drivers complied, but some refused, and officers were obliged to test the drivers for alcohol, as it is against the law to be over the limit. Some drivers were subsequently arrested for DUI, as the breathalyzer had indicated a higher reading.
