Dadaism

Dadaism, also known as Dada, was an early-twentieth-century artistic and literary movement that flourished in Europe and North America from roughly 1916 to 1924. It emerged as a reaction to the horrors of World War I and the perceived failures of societal values and reason that led to the conflict. Dadaists rejected logic, reason, and aestheticism of modern capitalist society, embracing irrationality, chance, and absurdity. They sought to provoke and shock their audience, often using nonsensical and provocative forms of expression in art, poetry, performance, and collage. Dadaism was a rebellious and anti-establishment movement, a nihilistic art form fueled by a profound sense of disillusionment. Its impact was short-lived, yet it laid the groundwork for several later artistic movements, notably Surrealism and Pop Art.

• The Dadaist manifesto, a jumble of nonsensical pronouncements, perfectly epitomized the movement's rejection of traditional artistic conventions and embraced chance and chaos. This chaotic and unstructured approach perfectly conveyed the disillusionment felt by its members with society after World War One.
• Marcel Duchamp's 'Fountain,' a urinal presented as a work of art, is a prime example of Dadaist provocation. The artwork's deliberate use of the absurd and the mundane forced viewers to question the very definition of art and artistic value. This perfectly captured the era.
• Many Dadaists used collage to create art, randomly putting together elements such as newspaper clippings and paint to express meaninglessness and chaos.
