Despots are autocratic rulers who hold absolute power and exercise it in a tyrannical, often oppressive manner. They typically govern without regard for laws, constitutional restraints, or the welfare of their subjects, ruling solely based on their own whims and self-interest. Historical despots are often remembered for their cruelty, ruthlessness, and the suffering they inflicted upon their people through arbitrary decrees, harsh punishments, and the suppression of dissent. Their reigns are marked by centralized control, the erosion of individual liberties, and the abuse of power to maintain control and accumulate wealth.

• The ancient pharaohs of Egypt, viewed by some as deities, operated as absolute despots. They commanded vast armies, controlled the economy, and demanded complete obedience from their subjects. Their power was often maintained through elaborate systems of control, from religious dogma to brutal punishments for those who questioned their authority. Their legacies are of monumental construction and the subjugation of a population for the pharaohs’ glory.
• Many historians consider Genghis Khan a despot due to the brutal Mongol Empire's methods. He established an empire through military conquest and ruthlessly subjugated conquered territories. His rule was characterized by swift justice, but his punishments were often cruel and his campaigns resulted in widespread death and destruction.
