Dyke

A 'dyke' (also spelled 'dike') has two primary meanings. Firstly, it refers to a physical structure: a long wall or embankment built to prevent flooding from a body of water, often a river or the sea. These structures are crucial in protecting low-lying areas. Secondly, and more controversially, 'dyke' is a derogatory term for a lesbian, a woman whose romantic and sexual attractions are primarily or exclusively towards other women. Due to its historical use as a slur, many lesbians and allies actively reclaim the term, embracing it with pride and using it to foster community, while others avoid its use altogether. Use of this definition is subjective and the derogatory nature of the term should be considered
