Elixirs (plural of elixir) are typically transparent, sweet, and hydroalcoholic (containing water and alcohol) liquid preparations intended for oral use. They contain one or more medicinal substances that are dissolved in the vehicle, often with flavoring agents to make them more palatable. They differ from syrups, which are usually more viscous due to a higher sugar concentration. Historically, elixirs were believed to be magical or medicinal potions, particularly those with the power to prolong life or cure illnesses, and this connotation persists, often metaphorically. Modern elixirs, while not possessing mystical properties, are nonetheless carefully formulated to deliver medication effectively and can be employed for cough suppression, pain relief, or to supplement dietary deficiencies, offering a pleasant taste and efficient administration.
