Hematoma

A hematoma is a localized collection of blood outside of blood vessels, typically in a liquid or clotted form, often within the tissues. It arises from damage to blood vessels, which leads to blood leaking into the surrounding areas. Hematomas are common occurrences, ranging in severity from minor bruises to life-threatening internal bleeds. The body typically reabsorbs hematomas over time, though larger ones may require medical intervention. The color of a hematoma often changes over time, reflecting the breakdown of hemoglobin. The swelling, pain, and discoloration associated with a hematoma vary depending on its size, location, and the depth of tissue involvement. Medical professionals frequently assess hematomas to rule out further internal damage.
