This often occurs for political, strategic, or public relations reasons, creating an illusion of presence or influence while concealing a lack of real power or effectiveness. - The CEO's son was nominally-placed on the board to appease shareholders, despite having no business acumen. He attended meetings but offered no real contributions to the company's strategy, his presence serving more as a symbol of family involvement than a source of informed guidance. The actual decision-making power lay with the experienced executives who subtly disregarded his input.
- The department head was nominally-placed in charge of the project because of political considerations. Though his title suggested oversight, he deferred all critical tasks to his subordinates. The project's success didn't rely on his active participation but on the team he supposedly led. His primary function was simply to represent a senior leader.
