Non-indentured
Non-indentured describes a person or worker who is *not* bound by an indenture agreement. An indenture is a formal contract where a person (the indentured servant) agrees to work for a specified period for another person (the master) in exchange for passage, lodging, and maintenance. Therefore, a non-indentured individual is free from such contractual obligations, able to freely choose their employer, working conditions, and period of service. This status implies greater autonomy and often represents a step up from servitude, affording them a measure of control over their own labor and life.
