Servitude is the state of being a slave or completely subject to someone more powerful. It encompasses a loss of freedom and autonomy, often involving forced labor or service. This condition can manifest in various forms, from chattel slavery to indentured servitude, and it can arise from economic necessity, political coercion, or legal constraints. The term implies a diminished capacity for self-determination and a vulnerability to the will of another. • The ancient Roman Empire relied heavily on servitude, using enslaved people for labor, both domestic and agricultural, to drive its economy. Their lives were entirely controlled by their owners, and they had no legal rights, experiencing constant hardship and fear. This widespread servitude contributed significantly to the Empire's wealth and social structure. The institution deeply affected the lives of those enslaved and fueled significant social unrest.
