Stance

A stance is a position or attitude that someone adopts about something, particularly a carefully considered and publicly expressed one. It often reflects a person's beliefs, principles, or intentions. This position can be physical, like the way someone stands, or metaphorical, relating to their views on a particular issue, situation, or subject. It implies a degree of conviction and commitment to the stated position or viewpoint. The concept encompasses not just a single opinion but a cohesive framework of beliefs and behaviours linked to that position.

Her clear articulation of her position was aimed to persuade voters to support her policy, regardless of any opposition. The media reported the impact it would have on the polls.
• In the debate, the union leader maintained a strong stance against any concessions on worker benefits, arguing that these were essential for fair treatment and economic security. Her unwavering defence of employee rights displayed how the union remained dedicated to its promises. She stated any compromises would create economic problems.
• During the negotiation, the company adopted a tough stance on price, initially refusing to budge from its asking price, in order to test the resolve of the other party. The company felt it could maximize profits with a hard bargain. The aggressive approach was aimed to extract maximum value for the corporation's products and services.

It aimed to reassure students. The aim was to uphold the values of tolerance within the school community to restore their values.
• The athlete adopted an aggressive stance in the boxing ring, ready to attack his opponent, displaying focus. This was a posture that was calculated to intimidate his adversary and gain an advantage in the fight. The pose would help in defence and the fighter's readiness for an offensive move.
