Xerosis

Xerosis, derived from the Greek word 'xeros' meaning 'dry,' refers to abnormally dry skin. It is a common condition characterized by a lack of moisture in the skin, leading to symptoms like itching, scaling, flaking, and sometimes even cracking or fissures. xerosis can affect any part of the body but is most frequently observed on the lower legs, arms, elbows, and hands. The severity of xerosis can range from mild, barely noticeable dryness to severe, uncomfortable, and aesthetically displeasing skin conditions. Factors contributing to xerosis include environmental conditions (e.g., cold, dry climates), frequent bathing or showering, harsh soaps, certain medical conditions, and aging.

Xerosis meaning with examples

• During winter, the cold, dry air exacerbated my xerosis, causing significant itching and flaking on my legs. I started using a richer moisturizer, applying it several times a day to combat the dryness. The change in climate and low humidity levels significantly affected my skin's moisture balance. This helped considerably, reducing the discomfort associated with my dry skin. Proper hydration and avoiding hot showers also helped to alleviate my symptoms, and now I have healthy skin again.

The underlying medication can potentially be the problem but more investigation must be completed.
