Dehumanization

Dehumanization is the psychological process by which a person or group of people are perceived and treated as less than human. It involves stripping individuals of their human qualities, such as empathy, individuality, and dignity, often portraying them as animals, objects, or threats. This can occur through various means, including propaganda, hate speech, stereotyping, and social exclusion. The consequences of Dehumanization can be severe, paving the way for prejudice, discrimination, violence, and even genocide. It erodes moral boundaries, making it easier to justify mistreatment and inflict suffering on others. The core effect is a denial of the targeted group's or individual's fundamental human rights and a justification for their marginalization or annihilation. Dehumanization can manifest at both individual and societal levels, profoundly impacting social dynamics and power structures.

• During the Rwandan genocide, the Hutu population was subjected to relentless propaganda that portrayed the Tutsi minority as 'cockroaches,' a clear example of dehumanization. This rhetoric fueled hatred and violence, making it easier for individuals to participate in the mass killings, leading to widespread atrocities and the destruction of thousands of lives.
• In the context of war, enemy soldiers are frequently dehumanized through propaganda campaigns. Soldiers are depicted as monsters or vermin to distance the enemy and ease the mental burden of killing. This Dehumanization enables actions that would be unthinkable in the context of normal social relations, fostering atrocities.
