Hanger-on

A 'hanger-on' is a person who persistently associates with another, especially for personal gain or advantage, often in a somewhat unwelcome or intrusive manner. They typically lack genuine connection and their presence is driven by a desire to benefit from the target individual's status, resources, or social standing. This individual might engage in flattery, mimicry, or constant attempts to remain close to the person they are associating with. The hanger-on's dependence and their perceived lack of intrinsic value can make them a nuisance to the target, although they often serve some purpose, or fill a social role. The association is usually viewed as one-sided, with little genuine reciprocal value provided by the 'hanger-on'. Their actions stem from a need to be included or their own personal desires.
