Coagulum

A coagulum is a semi-solid or solid mass formed by the coagulation of a liquid, especially blood or a protein-containing substance. This process, known as coagulation or clotting, results from the conversion of a liquid or a sol into a gel-like or solid state, typically through the action of a clotting agent, or chemical process. The resulting coagulum, also sometimes referred to as a clot, is formed when soluble proteins aggregate and form an insoluble network, trapping other substances. The consistency can vary from soft and jelly-like to firm and rubbery, depending on the nature of the substance and the factors promoting coagulation.

• Following a minor cut, a small coagulum formed on the skin's surface, effectively stopping the bleeding. The fibrin threads within the coagulum acted like a net, trapping red blood cells and platelets to seal the wound and initiating the healing process. The size and firmness of the coagulum depended on the depth of the cut and the individual’s clotting ability, demonstrating the body's natural defense mechanism.
• In the process of cheesemaking, the milk is treated with rennet, an enzyme that causes the casein proteins to coagulate. This results in the formation of a curd, which is essentially a coagulum of milk proteins. The firm coagulum is then cut, drained, and processed further to remove whey and shape the cheese into a consumable product. Different coagulation methods lead to different cheese textures and flavours.
• During blood analysis, a sample may be left to coagulate, forming a serum and a coagulum. The clear serum, separated from the coagulum, allows doctors to accurately test for various substances and look for any abnormalities. Examining the size and nature of the coagulum can provide insights into a person's health and the efficiency of their coagulation factors.
• When a protein solution is heated, it may denature and form a coagulum. This is evident when egg whites are cooked, forming a solid white mass due to the denatured protein's coagulation. The physical and chemical changes caused by heat alter the protein structure causing them to bind together, forming a firm texture in the cooking process.
